Getting NFT Marketplace Data from OpenSea NFT API

In this Community Highlight, let’s take a look at the OpenSea API on OpenAPIHub. What is it, and how do you you use it?

What is an Non-fungible tokens (NFT)?

Non-fungible tokens (NFT) are digital tokens that are unique and can’t be copied or substituted. They’re recorded in a blockchain and used to certify authenticity and ownership.

For example, NFTs could be used in games to make items that are more valuable and rare. Or they could be used in a marketplace to buy and sell goods and services.

What is Opensea?

OpenSea is a web3 marketplace for NFTs and other crypto collectibles. Users can deposit their crypto currency and use it to purchase NFTs listed on the platform. They provide tools for users to build their own NFTs and different ways of marketing your NFT to users.

The Opensea NFT API

The OpenSea API helps developers build tools using NFTs and OpenSea’s marketplace data. Developers can fetch ERC721 and ERC1155 token metadata as well as other core elements of OpenSea’s marketplace, including events, collection, listings, offers, for example.

Please note that this API does not enable any trading of digital assets, but rather exposes the marketplace data for free public use.

Potential Use-cases

This OpenSea API may be of use in order to:

  • Get informed on the NFT space
  • Make more informed investment decisions
  • Build tracking tools and other tools for the NFT space

How to track NFT transactions?

Unlike transactions in fiat currencies, most cryptocurrencies have a public ledger allowing anybody to track transactions made on the network.

This might be useful as an investor in order to see the interest and prior price of the token. It may also be useful to investigators to help uncover fraudulent behaviour in the space.

Using the Opensea API, tracking NFTs is made easier. See how you can use it in the next section.
